To teach young ones about pollution, I have each child bring in a piece of recyclable garbage. We sit around a pretend pond (a large painted blue sheet of butcher paper) that is filled with paper fish. I tell a story about how the fish live in the pond surrounded by the beautiful woods. As people visit the area for picnics, they begin to throw their trash into the water. I have the children do this, one at a time. As more trash goes in, the fish of course have to come out. Soon thepond is full of garbage and no fish. Now I ask the children to help clean up the pond by removing their garbage and placing it into appropriate recycling containers. These I have made ahead of time by taping commonly recycled items (newspaper, glass bottle, plastic container) to the outside of a paper bag. We feel really good when the pond is clean and the fish can come back to swim there.

Art: Cut contact paper into a long strip to form a bracelet. Make the bracelet so that it will be sticky side up. Go on a nature walk and let your children put whatever they find (grass, flowers, feathers, sticks, pebbles, etc) on the bracelet.

Snack: Chocolate Pudding Mix
        Milk
        Oreo Cookies
        Gummy Worms
        Cool Whip
        Cups
        Spoons
        Zip Lock Bags
In a zip lock bag place Oreo cookies, have your child break them up by banging the bag. Cover bottom of cups with crumbled Oreos. Combined pudding mix and milk to make your pudding, pour into cups; leaving 1/2 an inch of space at the top. Refrigerate pudding until set. Add crumbled Oreos to the top of each cup and garnish with a gummy worm.
Trail Mix The day before you make this have each child decorate a small paper bag. The next day make trail mix. You can use raisins, peanuts, sunflower seeds, M&M's and cheerios or you can make up your own combination. About 4 or 5 choices are best. Put each item in a separate bowl, put a small tablespoon or coffee scoop in each one. Number each bowl. The number 3 with a picture of 3 spoons by the raisin bowl, the number 1 with a picture of 1 spoon by the m&m's. The children go to each bowl and add whatever number to their bag. Three spoons of raisins, 1 spoon of m&ms, 2 spoons of sunflower seeds and 4 spoons of cheerios. After you make your Earth Day trail mix, go for a nature walk.
